What is Pet Nat?

A lot of people are starting to engage with this new wine style that is sweeping the nation.

Pet Nat is a style of winemaking where the wine is bottled before primary fermentation is complete. Creating a wine that has carbonation and interesting characteristics. Originally named “petillant naturel” (an old school style of winemaking), this wine style is popping up in tasting rooms and wine shops around the country. People are excited to try this type of wine because it’s different, tasty, and inviting.

I had the pleasure of trying a Pet Nat from Tank Garage Winery called Space Crush. Space Crush is a Pet Nat wine created from Riesling grapes. From the first sip, bubbly Riesling notes dance on your tongue inviting you to join the Pet Nat party. Notes of yeast, lemon peel, and grapefruit create a crisp and textured glass of wine. Delicious flavors of crisp apple, pear, and caramel round out your palate. Rich in taste and complexity, this was a wine I had trouble sharing… 😉

Visiting Tank Garage Winery:

Location: 1020 Foothill Blvd., Calistoga, CA 94515

Tasting Fee: $25.00 to taste 4 wines. Each tasting lasts about 45 minutes.

Tank Garage Winery is located in Calistoga, CA. When you pull up to the tasting room you feel transported. The exterior is an old motor cycle garage and gas station converted to look like it’s straight out of the 50’s. When you enter the tasting room you feel like you just walked into a Baja surf shop combined with some killer motor cycles on display. The tasting room staff is very friendly and are eager to chat about the interesting wines that they create. I highly suggest visiting if you are ever in Napa Valley. It’s a great place to taste some delicious and alternative blends. #shockthatpalate
